First day

First day at the new job!

It wasn't what I expected. I was hired as a QA analyst, but for the intro period, at least, I'll be doing tech support. That's just fine by me, though, because it'll be an easier learning curve than jumping right into QA. It was great hooking back up with people I worked with six years ago, and tomorrow, because I'll be working with the tech support guys who work for the company I used to work at six years ago, I'll actually be going there rather than to the company I actually work for and working there for the next few days. More friends to reconnect with!

On the other hand, since I'm the first new hire for a department the company is building, there are no training docs, not even a list of "here's all the websites and tools you'll need accounts for", so I'm a bit lost. I'll be actually building those docs so that the next person doesn't have to go through this pain.

So this is sort of the reason why I haven't been around much. I took a week off between the jobs, and my husband said, "Well, if you're going to be sitting around for a week, why don't you go travel somewhere?" So I did. I went up to Vancouver, B.C. for the week. I think if I had taken two weeks off, I probably would have hopped a flight to England, but as it was, Canada was as far as I was willing to go for five days. Vancouver is a very nice city; if I had to describe how it felt, I would say that it's like San Francisco, but clean and not pretentious. I won't bore you with details of the trip, but I will say that I took a gorgeous seaplane tour and discovered that it's an easy seaplane ride from Vancouver to Victoria. Someday I might return and visit both places, traveling by seaplane.

Anyway, this, along with the job chaos and the pneumonia and flu, is the reason why I didn't get my fic for dw_guestfest in. I feel so bad! I'm still working on it, and hope to have it done this weekend.

I will, however, leave you with this pic, because it made me laugh when I saw it. No, really - who names their travel agency after their first name and last initial? I guess someone already has a backup career in the works.

Ooh, that picture is precious! *snort* DT Travel! Does it include Time and Space? Is the store bigger on the inside? So many questions....

I always ended up designing training manuals and curriculum wherever I went, just because it was my nature (an educator by training). Lab manuals, accounts payable procedures, whatever, wherever. Sometimes I not only developed, but implemented training. It's rough, but you get it done the way it should be and, as you say, the next person won't have to re-invent the wheel.

Anyway, congratulations on starting your new job, and best of luck to you!

You know, it didn't even occur to me to cross the street and actually look in the window of that travel agency. But you know, that's a great marketing plan. Open the "Blue Box Travel Agency" with the motto, "Go anywhere in time and space!"

The wheel's getting more and more difficult to invent. It doesn't help that I'm returning to a project that I left six years ago, so I know a lot of the basics and jumped right into the work, but I have to document this stuff for people who won't know the basics. So now I have to figure out what stuff I'm taking for granted that needs to be documented. :P

I know what you mean about the basics. I start with going through the process step-by-step, writing it down as I do it, assuming no prior knowledge. When I'm done, I follow my procedure. If there's something that is missing in my explanation, I'll usually find it then. Good luck!

First, congrats! Good that you found the upshot to starting in something other than what you signed on for. I hope this becomes spectacular for you!

And thank you for the big giggle. I was snorting like crazy. :D

So far, it's been great! I think switching jobs was a great move for me.

Hmm, now is that travel arranged by or travel to? I'll take the, ahem, package tour?

Speaking of backup careers, there's an "RAB Motors" around here that gives me a giggle. (I don't have a link handy but based on that, someone actually once wrote a fic where Regulus did just that, escaped and hid as a car dealer in Europe for a while, or something. It wasn't as cracky as it sounds.)

Now that RAB Motors thing mixed with the fanfic is awesome! I don't usually note small coincidences, but when they're perfect like that, it's great. (I have a friend who tells me about every coincidence she sees, including every single thing that has either "Rose" or "Tyler" in them. It gets old really fast...)

LOL!! DT Travel...the ironies and fun are varied and there are so many of them!!

Dude. Sounds like your workplace is gonna kick ass!! Old friends. Start fresh (I mean, when you hunt this stuff up and put it in a training manual, I know it will make everyone's job easier!)

So, so glad you went there!! I'm thrilled to bits! And YAY vacation for a start! Whoot!

Ah! A QA that's cool! Good luck with that!
It totally peaked my interest because we're currently hiring for that same position at my company right now. I hope they pay you well! :)

Yup! I love doing software QA. And my boss is very knowledgeable and is bringing in new methodologies, so this is a great opportunity for me. They're paying okay. It's a step down in pay for me, because they're paying normal (well, actually, somewhat high) for the area we're in but my last job was paying normal for San Francisco, where the parent company is based. However, it was worth it to me to get out of the old company, even with the pay cut.
