The downs, and then the ups

It's been a wild four days.

A couple of months ago, I posted about being handed my RIF notice, which stands for "reduction in force" and is jargon for "you're going to get laid off in two months". I'm really not going to go into details about the full situation, partly because it would just take too long, and partly because I'm sure at least some of this is confidential. Up until now, we haven't been too nervous about the possible layoffs, because the company really has been trying their best to secure a new project that would save our jobs. However, we're coming down to the last week of the notice period and the company postponed buying the new project, leaving only a couple of days buffer between "Yes, new project! We're saved!" and "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." You know how corporations move like molasses; a couple of days buffer is nothing. There are a lot of upset people here right now.

I'm not the type to get upset about this kind of thing, possibly because I've been through enough layoffs and reorgs to know that it's not worth it to get upset: things will happen as they will and you'll deal with it when you come to it. However, this time, even I was upset, since it seems like the higher-ups don't give a crap about the security of their minions. Let's put it this way: I was upset enough to open Craigslist to see if there were any jobs being advertised in my field.

There was.

One listing for what I want to do, what I'm qualified to do. The company was founded and is owned by two people I worked with two companies ago, and the work they do is on the same system that I used to work on back then. So, I have connections there and extensive experience with the system. I spent that evening putting together my resume and collecting references, and emailed it all in the next morning. Forty-five minutes later, I got an email asking for a short phone introduction conversation, which I of course agreed to and we scheduled for the next day (which is today). A few hours later, they called me back. Apparently, the manager passed my resume around and a number of the people there said they knew me and gave me glowing recommendations, so he wanted to change the introduction conversation to a full in-person interview. Well, I'm back from the interview with a comment that he's "very interested" and an assurance that I'll hear from him in the next couple of days.

So, it's very possible that I'll have a new job very soon, and if the new project does come in at my current company, they'll be short-handed. For me, t'll be a pay cut (because I'm a manager now and I won't be one at the new company; this is a good thing, as I really hated being a manager), but the job brings stability and the work is what I want to do. It's vindictively satisfying that this is a result of my current company actively shitting on their employees: if they had made the decision about the new project when they said they would, I would never have been on Craigslist in the first place. So there's a lesson for them that I'm sure they'll never learn.

No, they will never learn that lesson, unfortunately.

I hope all goes well for you, whatever direction it takes!

I'm so happy for you!

I'm going through something similar right now which is why I missed G1 this year, but I'm trying hard to adopt your mindset.

Good luck and im glad things are looking up for you.
