Fanfic Writing Meme #29

Penultimate meme post! Wow, I really did write all that stuff. It was a great exercise, though, making me thinking about what, where, when, how, and why I write.

Oh, by the way, I'm posting the last existent story in Calling the Doctor today. Don't worry, there will be more. I do plan to write stories for each of the Doctors. I just don't know yet how to write them.

Just recently, I got myself onto deviantArt to post fics, mostly because I encountered a writer on ffnet who I'm just really impressed with, who's really active on dA. Want to read some great fiction by a prolific author (a little DW, but mostly original fic and Transformers)? Check out JZLobo.

29. What is your current project or projects?

Ah. How to answer this question without telling everyone about the ideas I have? I have tons of half-written fics and outlines of ideas, not to mention idea scraps that haven't been outlined yet. Here the ones that I am either working on or most likely to work on within the next month.

  • The next installment of Calling the Doctor. I got the idea for it yesterday. It's about time I returned to this collection.
  • The next installment of A Teacher and a Housemaid. I had completely forgotten about the idea for this next story, but luckily, I came across the research I had done for it a couple of days ago.
  • My big chaptered fic that I started back in December. It's an exploration of how an OC is affected by her encounters with the Doctor. I'm not saying more about it because it's very experimental and I'm very protective about the core idea.
  • My first non-DW fic! Watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, an off-hand comment by one of the characters sparked an idea in my head. This would probably be in position #2 in this list except it requires me to reread some parts of HP5, but I normally don't have time to do anything except obsess about DW. ;)
  • A Tenth Doctor/Donna adventure set during the Regency. I keep writing a few chapters of this, then changing it around and rewriting. I think I'm on the third complete rewrite of this. But I couldn't resist plopping Donna down in the middle of the English gentry.
  • A Time War short story. A bit outside of my comfort zone.
  • A rewrite of Black Orchid to make it a real mystery story.
  • One of my stories in A Teacher and a Housemaid has John Smith wondering if he could write down his dreams as novels. I want to take one of the DW episodes and adapt it as a novel in the style of H. G. Wells or Edgar Rice Burroughs, saying that it's the novel that John wrote.

I'm also working on the outline of the story I want to write for NaNoWriMo. The biggest problem with it is that I don't think it's actually long enough to make 50k words. Either I need to pad the work with more action, or learn to write better (longer) descriptions.

Good luck with all of those projects—whoa, that's a lot! :D What would the HP story be about? (Characters at least, if you don't feel like sharing more yet.)

Good luck as well with the NaNo planning! Well, your story might very well surprise you in the end :) That's what happened with mine, I wasn't sure at all that would make 50K (at the beginning I was near positive they didn't have the potential to get anywhere close, actually) and I ended up getting beyond 50K both times…

Sure, I don't mind sharing. You know me - I like writing missing scenes that fill in backstory. Well, during the scene where Slughorn is challenging the class to brew the Draught of Living Death, with the phial of Felix Felicis as the prize, he says that only one student has ever managed to win. In my mind, there's only one person who could have won it, and I wondered what that person did with the tiny bottle of Liquid Luck. That's what the story is going to be about. I know exactly how it's going to go; I'm just not familiar enough with the characters I'm going to use to write it yet.

I'm not too concerned about actually winning NaNoWriMo - I'm looking at it more like a fun exercise - but it would be nice to get somewhere near the goal. The problem is that what I plan to write is an adventure - an episode, sorta - and I find that adventures are difficult to make long, because there's so much action and less character interaction introspection (which, at least in my writing, is what pads the wordcount). I will probably have to create more sticky situations to get the characters into.

That sounds really great! :) I love the idea!

That's the best state of mind :) But yeah, I get what you mean regarding action vs. character introspection. I'm sure you'll work it out though :)

Writing them down made me eager to get working on them! :)

One more question to go! You already know the answer to it, though. But I'm looking forward to writing it, just because I love thinking about it.

The first time I did NaNoWriMo, I only had half an outline but I finished over the word limit and in 15 days, so anything can happen when you start writing. I think the best thing you can take away from NaNoWriMo is the experience. You get so caught up in the writing that there's no time to second guess yourself or the work and that's very liberating.

I would also suggest just plowing through the story. Don't stop and look back at what you've written. Word quotas also help, too. Once you reach quota, you can take a break and recharge.

I sure hope it will work like this! I'm excited enough about the idea that I want to start writing now. :) Every so often, I pull out the outline and then tell myself, "No, you can't start until November!"

I think one of the big things for me will be to not look at the word count, but just keep writing until the first draft is done. Word counts get in the way for me.
