Meme-y time!

What better way to stop my depressing journal posts than a meme? I've yoinked this from lost_spook. I would really love any suggestions of characters to talk about it.

Give me a character and I'll tell you my:

First impression
Impression now
Favorite moment
Idea for a story
Unpopular opinion
Favorite relationship
Favorite headcanon

Please note: You can suggest any character but if it's outside Doctor Who, I may not know it. If I don't, I'll choose a similar character from a non-DW universe that I do know.

<3 Rory. You can tell because he's one of my few non-DT userpics.

First impression: He was the stereotypical besotted pussy-whipped boyfriend to Amy.

Impression now: He's the best-constructed recurring character of the Moffat tenure, with actual character growth. He invested his love for Amy into becoming a strong person, willing to go nose-to-nose with the Doctor when he needed to, filling the role of the Doctor's conscience that Amy never did. Amy is one lucky woman to have him.

Favorite moment: I would point to my userpic here, but actually, that's not it. I'd have to point to "The Pandorica Opens" - his first appearance with the Doctor not noticing he's back, his holding Amy as she began to die, his gaping at the Doctor appearing in front of him with the mop, and especially, his drawing his sword and standing guard in front of the Pandorica.

Idea for a story: Amy and Rory's first date after Amy finally realized that he wasn't gay and was in love with her.

Unpopular opinion: Rory deserved a lot better than Amy. (Don't get me wrong. I like Amy. I just think she treated him poorly.)

Favorite relationship: Rory and the Doctor. I love that Rory is a companion who is not dazzled by the Doctor. I suppose that Rory is Eleven's Donna.

Favorite headcanon: I'm pretty satisfied with Rory's storyline, so I wouldn't change anything, but this is my favorite headcanon: There's a fanfic in which Nine, just after Rose refused to travel with him, encounters Rory during his life with Amy after "Angels Take Manhattan". Neither of them know who the other is. Trying to figure out how to entice Rose, the Doctor asks Rory where in the world he'd take his wife if he could, and Rory says that he'd take her back to the moment they first met, to tell her that everything would be all right. Nine gets the idea to tell Rose that the TARDIS travels in time from that.

I completely agree with your unpopular opinion, so don't worry.

And I suddenly fancy finding a picture of Rory in his Roman soldier uniform.... Weird that should happen. ;)

Yup... Rory is Eleven's Donna. Both grew tremendously during their time with the Doctor, neither one would take his nonsense! I agree, both Donna and Rory deserved better than they got....

To return the favour, how about Kryten? (Or Holly if you'd rather. I miss Holly.)

This is so very hard because I'm not as familiar with Red Dwarf as I'd like to be. Years ago (probably over 10 years now), a friend gave us DVDs of the whole run and we watched through 2 or 3 seasons - I know that we got to see Kryten, but only just the very beginning of that character. We enjoyed it very much and always meant to get back to watching it all, but have only seen an episode here and there.

So, I'd have to go with Holly and I can't actually answer all the questions, as I don't remember details.

I remember loving Holly's completely dry delivery and how horrible he sometimes was to Lister though it was completely in character for a computer (you know, following the rules when it was completely inappropriate). I did get the impression that somewhere deep down inside that he loved making life difficult, or at least more amusing.

I actually have listed in my document of "stories that maybe I'll write someday" an idea for the Doctor landing on Red Dwarf, and part of the idea of course has his interactions with Holly. I've just never acted on it because it's such a daunting task to get them all right.

Oh -- I meant one written by shivver13! Although I will check these out too. I know I've read the last one because it's already in my Teaspoon favorites. I don't know if I've possibly run across any of the others on AO3 or FFN (where I subscribe to the feed for this specific crossover, but there hasn't been anything new posted to it in like a year).

Ah, I'm sorry - I was misled by you choosing Rimmer! I hope you do find the time at some point - it sounds as if you'd only got to S2, and I think S3-6 is pretty much the high point of RD. Plus, Kryten. (There's nothing he loves so much as laundry! Unless it's doing the hoovering. :-D) And much as I love original Holly, I do very much enjoy Hattie's Holly too.

I did get the impression that somewhere deep down inside that he loved making life difficult, or at least more amusing.

Haha, yes. I think so. Gotta amuse yourself somehow after 3 million years alone in deep space, even when you are only a computer with an IQ of 6000.

Tegan!
shivver13
Nov. 16th, 2016 12:54 am (UTC)
Tegan Jovanka

First impression: Lavender. :) Actually, by the time I watched my first Tegan episode ("Logopolis"), I'd already heard that she was the "mouth on legs". The thing I remember most, though, was that she didn't let the Doctor sway her from her goal of getting to her job. I remember that because I thought at the time that the classic female companions were pretty much damsels in distress.

Impression now: While she's not as strong as, say, Ace, Tegan was a go-getter. She didsn't just sit by and let events sweep her along like Nyssa did. And she talked back.

Favorite moment: For possibly the only time in her travels, in "Black Orchid", Tegan has the upper hand on everyone else in terms of understanding where they are. She gets to enjoy watching the Doctor playing cricket and making friends at the cocktail party, while Nyssa and Adric spend the whole time very confused.

Idea for a story: Five once commented about how Tegan was a good leader and organizer, and I've always wanted to write a story demonstrating that. I did do one, but it wasn't very good and I'd like to try again.

Unpopular opinion: I really prefer Tegan to Nyssa. I know that everyone loves Nyssa, but honestly, Tegan had more personality, and she was down-to-earth and loyal.

Favorite relationship: Tegan and Turlough make the best siblings.

Favorite headcanon: I like to think that Tegan led a good life after leaving the TARDIS. I know she didn't due to her traveling experiences, or at least she went through some really hard times, but she's better now.

Alec Hardy!
shivver13
Nov. 16th, 2016 05:33 am (UTC)
Ha, you know who I like talking about! :)

First impression: They did a good job of making DI Hardy unlikeable at first. Grumpy, antisocial, and unreasonable.

Impression now: Grumpy, antisocial... haha, actually no. Focused on his job to the point of not really understanding anyone else and not empathizing.

Favorite moment: When he went into the women's bathroom to try to help Miller after Joe pled not guilty, and subsequently tried to give her a hug because "that's what people do, isn't it?"

Idea for a story: I would want to write a bit of an introspective piece of him, either before he moved to Broadchurch or somewhere in the middle of series 1 as he's dealing with how much he hates his life in Broadchurch.

Unpopular opinion: Hardy should have died from the operation in the middle of series 2, leaving Miller to solve the Sandbrook case for him while dealing with Joe's trial.

Favorite relationship: Miller's and Hardy's friendship. Absolutely perfect.

Favorite headcanon: I can't think of any, actually. Though it's amusing to imagine that Hardy and Carver are twins separated at birth...

That bathroom hug (no hug!) moment truly was something else. It showed how awkward Hardy is with the idea of human interaction. There was a similar moment like that in S1 when he arrives on the scene (I think it was as they had info on the boat) early in the morning, and he just starts right in. Someone commented that "On Earth, it's customary to greet before starting on the work" or something like that! There are a lot of moments like that...

I have to agree about Hardy and Miller's friendship. It started out almost as loathing, but they both gained a great deal of respect for each other in the end.
